When you are searching for information, no matter if its books, encyclopaedias or the internet, there are some steps you can follow to make your search successful:
Define
Define what you need to find out. You can do this by:
Forming a research question e.g. Who was Pericles?
Identifying key words to use in an internet or library enquiry search e.g. “Olympics Ancient Greece”
Locate
Now you need to locate (find) the information. You can try the recommendations on this Wiki in the pages on Books, Websitesand Reference, or do your own internet search. Try the search engine Kids Click! for websites that are for school students and aren’t blocked. If your doing your own internet search, check out the Web Search Checklist.
Select
Ask yourself: what information do I really need to use? Check the assignment sheet to make sure that you have the right information. This is when you start to take notes. Remember to write down the titles, authors etc. of your information. You’ll need this for your bibliography
Organise
Now you have the information, you need to organise it. This is when you work out if you have everything you need to complete the assignment information wise; check your assignment sheet again to make sure you do. Don’t worry if you need more information – this happens a lot!
Present
Refer back to your assignment sheet and work out how you are going to present the information.
Assess
Now you’ve finished your assignment. Well done! Take a moment to assess how you went, and what you’ve learnt about researching – what you’ll do the same next time, what you’ll change. Remember, this process will help you with all your assignments.
Remember to keep referring to your assignment sheet all the way through the research process to make sure you're on the right track.
